PREFERRED CHARITIES

What are Preferred Charities?

As Key Clubbers and a part of the Kiwanis Family, we fundraise and spread awareness of organizations. We have 4 main preferred charities that we like to fundraise for. They are the following:

PTP (PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM)

Pediatric Trauma, or unintentional injury, is the #1 cause of death for children under fourteen years of age, ninety percent of which can be prevented. In response to this statistic, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation created the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994. This program works with children’s hospitals in Oakland, San Diego, Loma Linda, Madera, Honolulu, and Reno to raise funds used for training pediatric doctors, nurses, and first responders through the Kiwanis Doctor Program. These funds also become grants for Kiwanis and Service Leadership Program (SLP) clubs or are utilized to purchase medical and safety equipment and to establish or broaden community outreach programs.

Some statistics for these unintentional injuries are listed below:

  • Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S.

  • Unintentional injury kills more children every year than any other cause - including disease, homicide and suicide!

  • 90% of these unintentional injuries can be prevented!

UNICEF- PROJECT ELIMINATE

Because of their similar focus, Kiwanis and UNICEF have partnered to create the Eliminate project; the goal of this projects is to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.  Maternal and neonatal tetanus infects open wounds during childbirth via tetanus spores in the soil, causing the newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. Twenty-four countries are still affected by this disease, killing one baby every nine minutes, and occurs mainly in Africa, South Asia and East Asia. This disease is easily prevented with three doses of 60-cent immunizations, but it can prove extremely fatal to those who have not received the vaccines. As a result, UNICEF and Kiwanis plan “to provide an estimated 387 million doses of tetanus vaccine to women of child-bearing age” by 2015. Together, UNICEF and Kiwanis hope to raise $110 million to immunize over 129 million mothers. By raising money, UNICEF is able to help countless mothers in poor and hard-to-reach areas, leading to better health for the immunized mothers and their future children.

CMN- CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK HOSPITALS

Children’s Miracle Network was founded in 1983 to support better health care for millions of children. Currently, Children’s Miracle Network has over 170 associated hospitals across the nation. Children’s Miracle Network uses the donations that they receive to pay for the children’s treatment expenses. To raise money, Children’s Miracle Network works with corporate partners, including Walmart, Costco, and Sam’s Club, to fundraise money. In addition to these sponsors, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals hold an annual telethon known as A Celebration of Real Miracles. Furthermore, many high schools and universities organize dance marathon events to support Children’s Miracle Network.

MARCH OF DIMES

March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization founded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt that was previously aimed toward polio research. However, in 1958, this organization changed its mission to providing information and services designed to promote healthy pregnancies while working to prevent premature births and birth defects. To achieve this, March of Dimes distributes grants to local programs that focus on the quality and availability of healthcare and services that help promote women’s and

couples’ well-being to increase the chances of a healthy baby.  In addition, they support research that aims to prevent birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. The organization also runs the NICU Family Support program; this program provides information and comfort to families with infants in newborn intense care units (NICU). Through this program, they promote family care practices in partner hospitals (there are over 120 partner hospitals across the country) and professionally train NICU staff. Furthermore, March of Dimes hosts its annual March for Babies fundraiser and Prematurity Awareness Month, which is November; November 17th is Global Prematurity Day.
